Buying British: Valentines Meal Ideas

During January we fitted our new kitchen and although there is still work to do on the walls, we thought it would be lovely to have our first romantic meal in there for Valentines. I am now trying to plan a fancy 3 course meal using only British ingredients. These are my current ideas where all ingredients can be UK grown and produced.

Parsnip and Apple Soup with Parsnip Crisps

Homemade Blinis with Scottish Smoked Salmon and Creme Fraiche

Black Pudding on Brussel Sprout Puree with Sourdough Bread

Roasted Apple and Pork Chops

Onion Tarte Tatin

Roast Beef in Red Wine and Onion Marmalade

Red Wine Pouched Pears with Whipped Cream

Melted Cadburys Chocolate and Whipped Cream Mille Feuille

Raspberry Roly Poly Pudding with Custard

Although it may be hard to believe you can find all of these ingredients produced in the UK, with some hunting it is possible. UK Red Wine is actually available in most supermarkets, you just need read the labels thoroughly. We have found a brand called ‘3 Mills’ which is made from an imported grape concentrate but is processed and bottled in the UK. Also, Asda’s own brand jams are actually manufactured in the UK, although I don’t know where they get their ingredients from. Thankfully we still have a jar of home made red onion marmalade that I made last year which could be used to roast my beef in, but you may be able to find a locally produced one at a local farm shop. We are very fortunate to have a fantastic farm shop close to us which has a wide selection of local produce. When planning your Valentines meal this year why not first take a trip to your local farm shop for some inspiration.
